Liturgical Jazz

Time Period: 1959 to present

Style characteristics and performance practices:
  1. jazz music for use in the church or with church-related activities
  2. use of religious or spiritual text
  3. a merging of the melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic elements of jazz with liturgical forms such as the mass, cantata, oratorio, etc.
  4. jazz music which can be used as incidental music in both formal and informal religious ceremonies
  5. Tune sources include:
    1. original compositions
    2. musical materials from both the liturgy and secular sources
    3. extant jazz types (the blues, etc.)
