Chicago

Time period: The 1920s

Three categories of musicians in Chicago
  1. New Orleans transplants (black): Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Jelly Roll Morton, Johnny and Baby Dodds, and others
  2. New Orleans transplants (white): Original Dixieland Jazz Band (ODJB), New Orleans Rhythm Kings (NORK)
  3. Native Chicagoans: Austin High Gang, Frank Teschemacher, Jimmy McPartland, Benny Goodman, Gene Krupa, and others (Hoagy Carmichael and Bix Beiderbecke were honorary Chicagoans, coming from Indiana and Iowa, respectively)
Four types of audiences/places to play in Chicago in the 1920s
  1. Cabarets: mostly black audiences, speakeasies, south side of Chicago
  2. Ballrooms: mostly white audiences, dime-a-dance, the Loop
  3. Movie/Vaudeville: Apex Club, Vendome Theater
  4. Recording audiences: records of white groups (e.g., Wolverines, NORK, ODJB, and Bix Biederbecke) and black groups (e.g., King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, and others)
