The jazz program at Arizona State University endeavors to prepare young musicians for three areas of activity:
Professional activity as a studio musician in recording, radio/television and show work.
Performance activity as a jazz artist in small group and big band idioms.
Teaching jazz studies at high school or college level.
The ASU Jazz Studies program is based on the fundamental precept of active involvement in music. Although a thorough theoretical understanding of music is essential, ultimately there is no substitute for actually writing and playing music. Arizona State University will continue to provide this kind of dynamic experience for developing musicians.
